I’ll forever think of myself as the poor kid at the rich school or the scholarship kid at Catholic school. The big girl with the petite friends or the smart kid (surrounded by other smart kids) at the University where dummies are supposed to go. (They don’t for the record). No matter how much money I have or success I see or degrees I earn, I’ll look at myself in the mirror and always see the underdog, the scrappy girl fighting to prove to the world she’s worth their time. These songs are for her.
Gym Class Heroes-Here Comes a Fighter: This is a new one. Underdog 2.0. It may be the best so far. The Baby likes it because I let him listen even though they say hell. That’s a big deal around here.
Jerry Douglass-The Boxer (Featuring Mumford and Sons): Not only is this a great fighter song. This version is awesome even if it’s missing the smashing symbols that I adore in the original.
Mean-Taylor Swift: Make fun all you want. I love this song for a million reasons, not the least of which is my proximity to a big ole’ city.
Titanium-David Guetta (Featuring Sia): I’ve seen my Little Girl sing this song in my rearview mirror. She sings with a familiar determination that makes me wonder if it’s inherent, this scrappy grit, or if I just see too much of me in her.
Fighter-Christina Aguilera: This is an excellent song to run to with a broken heart. Grrrr….
Pink-Raise Your Glass: C’mon. You thought I wouldn’t? If I ever get a tattoo, it will somehow incorporate this song.
