I’m not strictly a fashion blogger but I am a wee bit obsessed with fashion and I know what I like. When I heard Vivienne Tam and Yoga Collection in the same sentence I knew to expect great things.
I was thrilled when I got an invite to see Ms. Tam debut her collection (created in collaboration with Chinese Olympian Li Ning and his fitness company) at a live sculpture garden in Barclay’s Capital Grove at Lincoln Center. Renowned Yogi Rodney Yee and his wife, equally impressive Collen Saidman, helped to show the usability of teh collection by leading a group of accomplished yogis in poses for the crowd.
Vivienne Tam said she created the collection because as someone who practices yoga she had a hard time finding clothes that could take her from workout to work and errands without racing to change. As someone who crams as much into her day as humanly possible, I was excited at the prospect of seeing yoga wear that I could wear all day without looking like a gym rat. If anyone can design clothes for that, it’s a high fashion designer who knows what you need for yoga.
Vivienne Tam and Li Ning did not disappoint. The pieces were beautiful and functional. The best part was they weren’t all tight and shiny so real women can wear them to school pickup and maybe even the office after a lunch class.
I was excited to see the pieces and equally excited to get a glimpse of Fashion Week. I have dreamed of going to a FW show since I was old enough to pick my own clothes. I never thought I’d actually get to and while I wasn’t under the tents, this was just as great. To combine it with my newly found yoga passion was even better. I got to meet Rodney Yee, who may just be on every singleGaiam DVD I own and Gwen Lawrence, the awesome woman I’ve been bending and stretching with for weeks since I discovered her Yoga for Runners on t.v.
All in all, a dream day.
