The Husband has been traveling a lot lately which means that at least one night a week I am too whipped to feed my family a home cooked meal. It’s a weakness, I’ll admit it. I love to cook but when cooking dinner becomes a chore that caps off an endless list of daily chores, I don’t want to do it anymore.
The dilemma then is always the same. Where do you go that the kids like, is quick enough for a weeknight, doesn’t empty my wallet and won’t send my cholesterol and their sugar levels through the roof? That is a lot of pressure to put on one meal, and meeting all that criteria rules out almost all our options.
Enter, Habit Burger. We have one not far from our house, so there goes quick and easy. The kids can get burgers and chicken patties so it checks off the kids like it category. The prices fall in the more expensive fast food category but still not high enough to feel like a sit down restaurant with a wine list so a family of four can get out of there without too much damage.
Here’s the best part, and no it’s not that they were founded in Santa Barbara, CA (although, if you know me, you know that’s a huge reason I love them) Habit Burger has the convenience of another fast burger joint, but the food is fresh and health and the options aren’t all meant to disguise the hidden sugar in every item.
I had a caesar salad with tuna and The Girl had a chargrilled tuna filet sandwich. Nothing was breaded, or coated in “seasoning”. Just plain tuna with some fresh lettuce, tomato and avocado. So while my boys enjoyed charburgers made with real meat and not “byproduct”, The Girl and I went even more healthy with two of the many such options.
Make no mistake, Habit Burger, as the name says, is still a burger joint. So, if you’re on a cleanse or cutting fat and carbs, it’s likely not your place. But, if you’re a family who has real nights like us and needs a quick, less expensive, and still healthy(ish) alternative to a home-cooked meal that will satisfy every eater in your family, make it a Habit.
Check out Habit Burger in one of their many Jersey locations: Lawrenceville (Mercer Mall), Eatontown (Michael’s Plaza), Teterboro (Teterboro Landing), Fair Lawn (Promenade Blvd), River Edge (Main Street),Parsippany (Morris Hills Shopping Center). We had dinner compliments of the Eatontown location for the purposes of this review. All opinions are my own.
