In the spirit of Cancer Sucks Week (oh yeah, I deemed it that) I am devoting today’s post to another cancer-ish topic. This time I get to combine two of my all-time favorite things; raising money to beat the heck out of this disease, and John Hurley.
John is my newest brother-in-law. You have read about him here. My Middle One has quite a crush on Mr. Hurley and I believe the feeling is mutual. He calls my kids cherubs. What more do you need to know?
I know, you’re saying, “yeah, yeah, yeah what the heck does he have to do with Cancer?” I’ll tell ya-he’s kicking it’s butt one mile at a time. Yes, folks, Mr. John Hurley is pedaling his 6’8″ frame all the way from San Francisco, CA to Portsmouth, NH this summer to raise money for Lung Cancer research. Yes, I said California and New Hampshire. In case you don’t know, they are states-very very far away from each other. Of course, he’s young and fit but still; CALIFORNIA TO NEW HAMPSHIRE on a BIKE!!!!
Whew, sorry.
Anyway, John has started a blog to explain his motivation (lung cancer has profoundly affected his life)and to track his progress during training and the ride itself. So you must visit there right now. (Ok, maybe finish reading this first.) You can also pledge to sponsor John on his ride which again, goes directly to Lung Cancer Research. Have I said cancer enough for one post?!?!?
You might notice I am a wee bit excited about this whole idea. Indeed I am-so much so that I am pledging 10% of my sales’ profits to John’s ride every month. If you’re following my Overhaul Manifesto on Working Chick, then you know that part of the overhaul includes giving back. I knew I was going to donate a portion of my profits every month for the year, but I wasn’t sure where or how. During my initial fishing expedition for charities, I got John’s email announcing his plans in my inbox (focus on solutions and they fall in your lap!). My father died of Lung Cancer and to this day it is still not one of the “sexy cancers”. You know what I mean, the ones that get all the press and fundraisers. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t begrudge any of the phenomenal groups who raise funds and awareness for other types of cancer, I just think they should all be important and in our faces all the time. I get excited when someone steps out and does something for a “personal” cancer like colorectal or lung.
So, three cheers for biker John and don’t be afraid to ask about my commitment to donate 10% of my profits to John every month. Can I get you to join me for a couple bucks too? It’s a great cause and he’s a great guy. Visit his blog but promise you’ll come back and see me. He is a pretty great distraction but I’m risking it for a good cause.
Now I better go sell some lipsticks!
*** Oh there were definitely better pictures of John, but he’s wearing a WVU shirt here so… I mean, c’mon.
