Last week, in the midst of Spring Family Madness, I snuck away for a quick trip into NYC to see Beetlejuice on Broadway and it was worth all the head-spinning planning to get there.
I’ll admit, I was skeptic. I’ve spent a few months lamenting the glut of movies from my early years that are currently on Broadway and wishing for more original shows.
Let me tell you, Beetlejuice made a fool out of me. (Which I think Beetlejuice himself would appreciate actually. Making a fool of alive-people is a specialty.)
There are so many good things to say, that original is the least positive compliment I can give it. Yes, it’s a familiar title from a movie long ago, and I promise you’ll get your fill of the Banana Boat song, but nothing feels old, stale or even close to boring.
The set is magical. The songs are fun-the kind you can’t get out of your head for days. And the acting, oh my lord, the acting. The collective talent on that stage was beyond description.
The audience is sucked in from minute one and then they are in on the jokes and the sentiment for the rest of the hilarious and twisty ride.
I could go on and on, but that would be boring and I refuse to be the only boring thing ever associated with this show. So, I’ll leave you with this: go see Beetlejuice. Take your kids (who are older than 10). Take your partner. Take your mom & dad. In a world that feels like it’s gone a little mad, we all could use a few hours of purposeful fun.
It’s a relief and that just feels good.
