I had grand plans when we moved into this house that I would have a garden. I covet my next door neighbor’s garden, with it’s neat rows and tilled soil.
The problem with my plans for a garden is that I don’t know the first thing about gardening and while I know I could teach myself, I don’t want to ruin the food in the process. I had given up on the garden and talked to everyone I knew about just planting herbs in a whisky barrel on my back porch. I mean, I could keep those alive right?
Maybe not.
I got so intimidated by the planting process (the seeds! the soils!) I was ready to give in to buying over-priced herbs at the store again.
Then I happened by a lady at the Red Bank Farmer’s Market who had these adorable potted herb gardens. She had done all the work. All I had to do was water and eat. What? The scary work was done? I made her answer about a thousand questions to ensure that I wouldn’t kill these beautiful herbs and she made me feel at ease that they required very little from me. Then she took my order to make the perfect window sill garden for me! I have all the herbs I love and use regularly right at my fingertips. The Bookends have even taken to the chore of watering so I literally do nothing.
It’s been about a month and everyone is thriving so we’ll see if we can make it until August with our little garden intact. If so, we’ll hopefully be able to add our tomatoes to the bunch and make some delicious red sauce with fresh basil. Look out for this girl!

I think you are on the road to success! The plants look very healthy. My herb garden is not looking as good as yours…I plant it mainly for the aroma…. and the herb wreath allow me to savor the aroma all Fall and Winter!

I have no gardening knowledge either and my veggie garden is doing great this year. I just threw the plans in the beds and voila! I’m going to plant pumpkins this weekend so they’ll be ready for fall!

You are brave. Maybe I’ll try next year if I don’t kill this little pot!
