We’re having the house painted and that means there is a radio playing all day while the work gets done. For some reason, even after five years in this place, I had not really listened to the local rock station. I guess when I programmed the minivan all those years ago I went with the first 12 NYC stations I found. The result is 9 of them are all the same 8 songs played over and over again, some with different dance beats behind them.
The constant base is enough to drive a girl mad while her grade-schoolers love every second of it. I cannot raise little fist-pumping clubbers, so I am happy to be adding a rock station to the lineup of music they will hear in my car. Also, it’s kinda fun to hear songs that remind me of all the boys who’ve made me mix tapes in my day. I have said to The Girl at least once this week, “someone sang this to me long ago”. It’s a whole new side of mom for her to see. We’re both loving it.
Just this week my kids have learned a thing or two about guitars, drums and their younger mom. It’s been fantastic.
Metallica-Nothing Else Matters: Ya’ll know my Pearl Jam obsession. These guys are a close second, even in all their old-wrinkled glory.
P.O.D-Youth of a Nation: Hopefully they weren’t listening too close to the lyrics to this one. ALthough, if they can survive the latest Twerk song they this shouldn’t scar them too bad.
Guns and Roses- Sweet Child O’ Mine: I’m actually embarrassed it took me so long to play this for my kids. Bad mom. (Also, I kinda love the myspace addy that scrolls across the bottom of this video. Throwback indeed.
Led Zeppelin-Thank You: I have heard more Zeppelin this week than I have since they were on a loop in college dorm rooms. This is one of many that rocked the minivan this week.

Oh my gosh! I think we must be the same age! When I listened to these songs, I thought, “Why haven’t I put these things on my IPod? Oh wait…because I don’t want to purchase them again when I have them on albums! This morning I was watching a YouTube video with a dad and his little girls in the car singing Bohemian Rhapsody! Damn! That was music worth listening to.

I can totally relate to not wanting to buy music twice! That said, I gave in a few years ago to the fact that I’ll never put those CDs into iTunes. Time to buy again!
