The other day I heard some great old hip-hop songs on a DJ LunchTime Mix. Other than them being labled “classic” which broke my old-creaky heart, I loved every second of listening. So I thought I’d share some of my favorites from junior high and high school. You know, now that they’re classics! I can picture 7th grade me laying on my stomach trying to hit the record button on my sweet Black Boom Box at just the right second to get these songs off the radio and onto my killer mix tape. Listen in. I dare you not to dance.
*I wrote this before we lost Ms. Houston. I didn’t include her on this list because she’s just obvious. I wanted to pick songs that you might not think of right away and who doesn’t always think of Whitney from this time period? She’s not on this list because she is THE list. We miss you Whitney.
Levert-Casnova: I have nothing to say about each of these songs. They are all too damn fun to comment on. Just dance people.
Chuckii Booker-Turned Away: There is no video. Just pure unadulterated pop. Who doesn’t love a singer with two Is?
Klymaxx-Meetin’ in the Ladies Room- Ditto two Xs. Although there is a video for this one. Man, is there a video. “Girl, you better watch your man.”
Lisa Lisa-Head to Toe: I can’t remember where I put my car keys, but I can remember every single word to this song. Man I miss my neon socks and my Jennifer. Don’t worry though, even though the socks are back in style, I won’t be sporting them anytime soon. My neon days are over.
The Jets-Crush on You: “No more charades. My heart’s been displayed.” Lyrical genius.
Hi-5-I Like the Way: This was as racy as my music got-a kissing game! Man my mom was lucky.
Taylor Dane-Tell it to My Heart: Oh Taylor, Taylor, Taylor. Sweet dance moves, every one.
