This was not the planned topic today, but my reaction to the Angelina Jolie Double Mastectomy story caught me off guard so I decided to bring it to you all and get some outside opinions. Mixed emotions on this topic. Just having gone through the yearly ritual of mammography….Which I also have mixed emotions about… I’ve been doing a lot of research. We tend to put all breast cancer in the same category. Most of the money for research and awareness benefit the least dangerous kind. Most of us don’t know that mammography is not good at detecting the type most likely to kill someone. Does this gene test indicate she had an 87% chance of having the kind most likely to be metastatic? Then it sounds like a very reasonable choice. Have you read about the study out of Dartmoth that indicates over a million women have been aggressively treated for early cancers that would most likely resolved on its own. Very confusing subject.
Agreed Tina! It is so confusing and that’s really why I found this news so unsettling. I think she has the right to do whatever she wants and am glad she made the best decision for her and her family. It’s just that I fear we aren’t all educated enough to know what is and isn’t the right decision for us. Thanks for bringing this up further.
