When I first started blogging, we were in the middle of filming an episode of an HGTV show. It was great fun and as you can imagine led to quite a few stories. I was telling someone this story the other day and I decided it was high time it made an appearance on this blog. I’ve written it before, but it bears repeating.
Imagine the scene, there are five or six men running around my house with cameras and microphones and nary a woman in site to give me wardrobe advice. I have just been told by the kinda-cute sound guy that the dress I’m wearing, the one I cleared with the casting director and stressed about for a few days, is going to be hard to work with as far as hiding my mic.
So, everyone’s ready to shoot and I have to find a new outfit. Ugh.
My husband on the other hand is showered, shaved, gorgeous and of course trying to squeeze in one work phone call before the madness begins. He is hiding in our bedroom as I frantically search for THE outfit to wear on television. You know the one that makes me look better than I do in real life but can still hide a remote mic pack. I find something, put it on and wave my arms wildly at The Husband to get his attention. I give him a look that says, “I know you are on an important call but pleeeeaaaase focus on me and tell me I look hot- dammit-right now because I’m freaking out!”

Because he is so wonderful, he reads this emotion in my eyeballs and I can tell really wants to help me out but is struggling to end his conversation with his boss. In an effort to end the call he says,( here is where the story goes into super dramatic slow motion) wait for it…
“ok, I love you”.
No, no, you don’t need to reread that last part. I wrote, “I love you” and yes I mean my husband did indeed say those exact words, over the phone, to his boss.

Really.
Luckily he caught himself enough to downplay it and extra luckily his boss found it funny. The best part was that after he hung up, he immediately walked out of the room and without missing a beat, told the crew to shut it down for the day because the show is about our move for his job and he was pretty sure he just got himself fired. They, of course all cracked up.

The point of this is not to just tell a funny story. The point is to say how living with the my Traveling Circus is full of little epiphanies that get disguised in total chaos. The moment that this happened I was reminded exactly why I loved The Husband and it is not just because sometimes when we’re together we laugh so hard I cry (although that is no small part). Nor is the reason that he is unshakable and so self-assured that not only does he roll with making such a gaffe, but he shares it with a room full of virtual strangers in a beautifully self-effacing way.
No, the real reason I love this man is that because, even after all these years together, he can still get so wrapped up in looking at me and thinking-I love you that he accidentally says it out loud-to his boss. That, is pretty cool.
