It seems fitting this week where we celebrated Girls to throw a few songs up for the ladies. Remember the days of girls spelled with the tough Z? You know, GRLZZ? I’m kind of glad that’s over but that the music stuck around.
Girl On Fire-Nicki Minaj and Alicia Keys: What girl is more powerful than Katniss Everdeen?
Stupid Girls-Pink: I mean, it’s Pink. She IS Girl Power. Also, the little girl in this video is wearing what appears to be a Redskin jersey. Pink is a Philadelphia girl, so this Eagle hater takes extra joy in her video giving a (possibly inadvertent) nod to my Skins.
I Am Not My Hair-India Arie & Pink: “I am not my hair. I am not this skin. I am not your expectation…. I am the soul that lives within”. Preach, ladies. Preach.
What You Get is What You See-Tina Turner: Tina Turner invented come-back girl power. And this video she gets her country on. It’s classic.
Respect-Aretha: Mmm, mmm, MM!

My ultimate “girl” power song (and it so doesn’t fit with these, but…) is “This One’s For The Girl’s” by Martina McBride. I am no lover of country music, but the song came out when I was around 25 and I still love the verse:
“This is for all you girls about twenty-five
In a little apartment, just trying to get by
Living on, on dreams and spaghetti-o’s
Wondering where your life is gonna go”
When I heard it, I was like YES this is me! Love this song! : )

I love that song. I think I’ve used it in a previous girl power MVM. It’s a good one!
