Today is my mom’s birthday. It doesn’t affect me in any way really. That might make me sound cold, but the truth is when you miss someone, the date doesn’t matter.
What I am thinking about today is how I want my kids to know it’s her birthday. January 20th has always meant more to me than Inauguration Parades every four years. I want my kids to pause on this day too, even though they don’t know my mom. She is worth the pause.
I didn’t want to be maudlin or just talk about her. I talk enough as it is and birthdays are fun, not sad.

Both of my older kids are out of school early today which means we need a project anyway. So guess what? Grandma is getting a cake for her birthday. We’ll make a cake and lick the mixing bowls and laugh and I can tell them stories.
I’ll probably even hum and sing the wrong words to songs that seem old to my kids- just like she did when she was in her kitchen.
Happy Birthday Mom. In your honor, screw the diet-we are having cake!

What a fantastic way to honor your mother's birthday. Have fun…some how I think that pictures from this day could end up as Funny Friday post! Enjoy.

I would love to be there for the telling of the stories and the singing of the wrong words to the songs…:) What a great way to spend her birthday. Enjoy!

I think about her almost every day but today she is a little closer. Enjoy the day in the kitchen and I think a good vodka tonic would go well with those old songs!!!
Plus I do like the idea of screwing the diet in honor of her. I don't think there is a better reason!
